What we cover
Alfa Romeo service scope across Giulia, Stelvio, Quadrifoglio, and 4C
Routine maintenance on the Alfa schedule
Alfa Romeo publishes maintenance intervals in 8,000-mile and 16,000-mile increments through 100,000+ miles. Small intervals for oil, filter, tires, and brakes; larger intervals for transmission fluid, coolant, and spark plugs. The shop follows the Alfa schedule and resets the service light as part of any scheduled service.
Common examples: Selenia-spec full synthetic oil change at 8,000 miles or 1 year, Brake fluid flush (DOT 4 standard, DOT 4 LV on certain Quadrifoglio brake-by-wire) every 16,000 miles or 2 years, Spark plug replacement at the 64,000-mile interval on non-Quadrifoglio trims, Coolant flush and timing chain inspection at 100,000 miles
ZF 8HP transmission service
The eight-speed automatic in every modern Giulia and Stelvio is the same ZF 8HP family in BMW 3, 5, and 7 Series, the Audi A6, A7, and A8, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Dodge Charger and Challenger, and the Chrysler 300. The procedure is the same across the family; the fluid spec is the variable. Lifetime fluid framing from early-2010s OEM marketing has been walked back across the industry.
Common examples: Fluid plus filter service at 60,000 to 80,000 miles per ZF industry guidance, Temperature-specified fill using an electronic level monitor, no dipstick, Adaptation reset and post-service road test for shift quality, Same fluid and filter spec the BMW, Audi, and Jeep Grand Cherokee work uses
Q4 AWD, brakes, suspension, and electrical
Q4 AWD transfer-case fluid and rear differential service on Q4 Giulia and every Stelvio (electronically controlled clutch pack benefits from the OEM-spec fluid at the recommended interval). Conventional suspension, brakes on iron-rotor, and Italian-electronics-aware electrical work where a weak 12V battery causes intermittent module faults.
Common examples: Transfer case and rear diff fluid on Q4 AWD trims with driveline inspection, Struts, shocks, control arms, ball joints, sway-bar links, and alignment, 12V battery health check at every routine-service visit, Check engine light, service light, Q4 AWD fault, infotainment fault, and sensor codes
Referred to the Alfa Romeo dealer
A short list belongs at Alfa Romeo of Maple Shade or Alfa Romeo of Cherry Hill. The front desk says which on the phone before any car is driven over. Most Quadrifoglio owners run two shops in parallel: routine and consumables here, specialty engine and brake work at the dealer.
Common examples: 2.9L twin-turbo V6 engine internal work (timing chain, head gasket, turbo, internal rebuild), Carbon ceramic rotor service on Quadrifoglio with the optional carbon-ceramic brake package, Active suspension module diagnostic and repair on Quadrifoglio, OEM software flashes, TSB downloads, warranty, and recall service
Symptoms and what each one usually means
Match what your Alfa is doing on the dash, under the hood, or under the car to the right next step. Alfa dashboard messages look more dramatic than they often are; the translations live below.
Service light or wrench icon on the dash
Mileage or time reminder, not a fault. The light comes on by calendar or mileage, not by a sensor reading. Reset after the scheduled service. If the light comes back on right after the reset, the scan finds out what else triggered it.
Check engine light
Standard OBD-II diagnostic. Scan, show you the codes, quote in writing before any repair work. The Stellantis-aware scan reads enhanced PIDs the generic reader skips, which matters on Italian-electronics-sensitive modules.
Service AWD or Q4 fault
Most often a wheel-speed sensor or transfer-case fluid level issue. Less commonly a transfer-case clutch-pack actuator fault. Diagnostic comes before parts get cannon-fired.
Harsh shift on a Giulia or Stelvio
ZF 8HP fluid likely overdue. The lifetime-fluid framing means a lot of 80,000- and 100,000-mile cars have never had the 8HP serviced. Catching it at the 80,000-mile mark with a clean fluid change and filter saves the valve body.
Infotainment restart loop or screen lag
Early Giulia and Stelvio infotainment has a known soft-reset pattern. A scan plus a 10-minute keep-alive reset often clears intermittent faults. Persistent faults are typically software-update path and go to the dealer.
Steering-feel change on a Giulia near 80,000 miles
Front control-arm bushings start to wear and create a steering-feel change around the 80,000-mile pattern on Giulia. Standard control-arm replacement, OEM or quality aftermarket.
Adaptive cruise or lane-keep fault
Usually a calibration or sensor-obstruction issue, not module replacement. Front grille debris and front-camera dirt are the two most common triggers. The diagnostic comes before the module quote.
Intermittent module fault tied to a weak 12V battery
Italian electronics are sensitive to a weak 12V battery. A battery that would still start a Toyota will create intermittent module faults on an Alfa. Battery health check at the routine-service visit pre-empts a lot of these.
Two or more at once, do not wait. Most Alfa Romeo faults are easier and cheaper to address while the failure is still partial.
Alfa Romeo service for Mays Landing and Atlantic County drivers
Kneble's has been in Mays Landing since 1981. The Alfa Romeo work has grown as the local fleet has grown, primarily on the Giulia and Stelvio that started arriving in 2017 and 2018. The shop is at 5473 Somers Point Road, five minutes off Atlantic City Expressway Exit 17. Drivers come in from Mays Landing, Hamilton Township, Egg Harbor Township, Folsom, Buena Vista, Hammonton, Northfield, Somers Point, and the rest of Atlantic County. The nearest Alfa Romeo dealers are Alfa Romeo of Maple Shade and Alfa Romeo of Cherry Hill, both about 50 minutes away. The trade-off most local Alfa owners make is convenience and labor rate against the dealer relationship. After the factory warranty expires, the labor-rate delta starts to add up, and an independent shop with Stellantis and ZF 8HP credentials becomes the more economical answer for routine work and most out-of-warranty repair.
Helpful details to mention
- Check engine light, with or without a noticeable change in how the Alfa drives
- Active suspension warning on a Giulia Quadrifoglio or Stelvio Quadrifoglio model
- Carbon-ceramic brake pad-wear warning on a Quadrifoglio-tier platform vehicle

01 of 04, Why Alfa
Why Alfa Romeo owners choose an independent shop
The nearest Alfa Romeo dealers are Alfa Romeo of Maple Shade and Alfa Romeo of Cherry Hill, both about 50 minutes away on Route 73 or the Atlantic City Expressway plus the AC Connector. For routine service and out-of-warranty repair, the dealer markup adds up on top of the drive. The Alfa hourly rate is in the same range as BMW or Audi dealer hourly rates.

Platform sharing
The Giulia and the Stelvio share platform DNA with vehicles serviced here every week. The ZF 8HP eight-speed automatic in the Alfa is the same transmission family found in the BMW 3 Series and 5 Series, the Audi A6 and A7, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Dodge Charger, and the Chrysler 300. The Stellantis electrical architecture uses the same diagnostic scan procedures the shop runs on the Jeep, Ram, Chrysler, Dodge, and Fiat side. A timing chain replacement on a Giulia is the same procedure as on a Chrysler 300 of the same era; the Alfa dealer bills more per hour to do it.
Where the dealer line stays
There are categories of Alfa work that belong with the dealer. Warranty service. Recall service. OEM software flashes and TSB downloads. Quadrifoglio twin-turbo 2.9L V6 engine internal work. Carbon ceramic brake bedding and rotor replacement on the Quadrifoglio carbon-ceramic option. Active suspension module diagnostic on the Quadrifoglio. Anything inside the dealer-only scope stays at the dealer, and the front desk says so when it sees it.
02 of 04, ZF 8HP
ZF 8HP transmission service on Alfa Romeo
The ZF 8HP eight-speed automatic is the transmission in every modern Giulia and Stelvio. It is the same family of transmissions in the BMW 3, 5, and 7 Series, the Audi A6, A7, and A8, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Dodge Charger and Challenger, the Chrysler 300, and the Land Rover Range Rover Sport.

Why that matters
The procedure is the same across the 8HP family. The fluid spec is the variable, not the procedure. ZF's industry guidance on the 8HP family is fluid plus filter service at 60,000 to 80,000 miles regardless of how the OEM markets the maintenance schedule. The lifetime-fluid framing from early-2010s OEM marketing has been walked back across much of the industry, and the failure pattern on neglected 8HP transmissions (typically harsh shifts, then valve-body wear, then catastrophic failure in the 120,000 to 160,000 mile range) is well-documented.
The procedure
Warm the transmission to a specified temperature, drain the pan, drop the pan and replace the filter, refill to the temperature-specified level using an electronic level monitor, scan and clear adaptations, road-test for shift quality. The same procedure runs on a Giulia as on a Jeep Grand Cherokee or a BMW 535i. The fluid spec is the variable, not the procedure.

03 of 04, What we
What we do and what we refer on Quadrifoglio
The Quadrifoglio Giulia and Quadrifoglio Stelvio share most of the routine-service surface with the Ti and Sprint trims. The differences are concentrated in three places: the 2.9L twin-turbo V6 engine, the carbon ceramic brake option, and the active suspension module. Everything else is the same Alfa.

In-house on Quadrifoglio
Oil and filter on the Quadrifoglio specification (typically 5W-40 or 0W-40 full synthetic per VIN). Spark plug replacement at the Quadrifoglio interval. Air filter, cabin filter, intake servicing. Cooling system service. ZF 8HP transmission service (same as Ti and Sprint). Brake service on the standard iron-rotor configuration. Tire mounting, balancing, and alignment including the staggered Quadrifoglio tire setup. Routine inspection and Stellantis OBD-II scan.
Dealer-only on Quadrifoglio
2.9L twin-turbo V6 engine internal work (timing chain, head gasket, turbo replacement, internal rebuild). Carbon ceramic rotor service on cars optioned with the carbon-ceramic brake package: bedding procedure, sensor reset, rotor replacement. Active suspension module diagnostic and repair. OEM software flashes and TSB downloads. The 2.9L twin-turbo V6 shares architecture lineage with the Ferrari engine family, which is why the engine-internal procedures benefit from dealer-only tooling. The line is explicit before quoting.
04 of 04, Common Alfa
Common Alfa Romeo patterns in the Atlantic County fleet
Decades in the same zip code surface patterns. Alfa Romeo is a smaller-volume make than BMW or Audi locally, but the patterns are consistent across the Giulia and Stelvio fleet that comes through.

The biggest preventable issue
Transmission fluid neglect is the single most common preventable issue. The lifetime-fluid framing means a lot of 80,000- and 100,000-mile cars have never had the ZF 8HP fluid serviced. Catching it at the 80,000-mile mark with a clean fluid change and filter saves the valve body.
Other patterns
Q4 AWD transfer-case fluid and rear differential are commonly missed on the maintenance schedule. Infotainment screen lag or restart loop on early Giulia and Stelvio responds to a 10-minute keep-alive reset. Front control-arm bushings on Giulia start to wear around 80,000 miles. Stelvio brake pad and rotor wear front-biased because of Q4 AWD weight distribution. Italian electronics are sensitive to a weak 12V battery; a battery that would still start a Toyota will create intermittent module faults on an Alfa.

FAQs
Alfa Romeo Repair FAQs
Are Alfa Romeo reliable?
The modern (2017+) Giulia and Stelvio are mechanically more conventional than the brand reputation suggests. The trouble spots are known and most are pattern repairs (transmission fluid neglect, infotainment soft-reset, front control-arm bushings on Giulia, Q4 AWD coupling fluid). Parts are available through standard channels. The reliability anxiety inherited from pre-2010 Alfas is partly outdated. The cars are not perfect but they are not unworkable.
How much does Alfa Romeo maintenance cost?
At an indie shop, routine maintenance on a Giulia or Stelvio runs in the same range as BMW or Audi routine maintenance. The variables are oil spec (Selenia or OE-equivalent), brake fluid spec (DOT 4 or DOT 4 LV), and whether the Q4 AWD service is due. At the Alfa dealer, the same services run meaningfully higher because of dealer hourly rate and dealer parts markup.
Is Alfa Romeo expensive to maintain compared to BMW or Audi?
At an independent shop, the labor rate is the same on an Alfa as on a BMW or Audi. The parts costs are comparable: Italian-branded parts have a small premium over the equivalent FCA-family parts, but the ZF 8HP transmission service uses industry-standard ZF fluid and a quality filter at the same cost as on a BMW. The total bill for routine work is usually within a few percent of the equivalent BMW or Audi service.
Can any mechanic fix Alfa Romeo?
Not every shop. The Stellantis OBD-II diagnostic scan requires the right tooling and the right familiarity with FCA-family modules. The ZF 8HP transmission service requires the electronic level monitor and the temperature-specific fill procedure. The Quadrifoglio scope-shield (engine internals, carbon ceramic brakes, active suspension) requires explicit knowledge of where the dealer-only line falls. A shop that already runs Jeep, Ram, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, BMW, and Audi work has the tooling and the familiarity in place.
Do you work on Quadrifoglio models?
Yes, on the routine-service surface. Oil and filter, spark plugs, air filters, cooling system, ZF 8HP transmission service, brake work on the iron-rotor configuration, tire mounting and alignment, and Stellantis OBD-II diagnostic are in scope. The 2.9L twin-turbo V6 engine internals, the carbon ceramic brake option, the active suspension module, and OEM software flashes go to the Alfa dealer. Most Quadrifoglio owners run two shops in parallel: routine and consumables here, specialty engine and brake work there.
Should I take my Alfa to the dealer for warranty work?
Yes. Warranty service, recall service, and OEM software updates require the Alfa dealer and the front desk says so up front. Once the warranty has expired, the dealer relationship is optional. Most owners save money by switching to an independent shop for routine maintenance and out-of-warranty repair, with the parallel-shop model on the Quadrifoglio for any specialty engine or brake work.
Will my Alfa Romeo still pass NJ State Inspection here?
Yes. Kneble's is an authorized NJ State Inspection Center. We inspect, and if something needs repair we tell you in writing; once the approved repairs are complete we can run a New Jersey state inspection here.
Will you use OEM Alfa Romeo parts?
Yes when you want them. Mopar and Magneti Marelli OEM parts are available through standard parts channels, and Brembo brakes ship from the OEM supplier directly. Premium aftermarket equivalents (Bosch, ZF, Mahle, Pagid, Akebono) are available when you want the savings. The part brand goes on the written estimate before anything gets installed.
