Pre-Trip Inspections Service Guide

Use this guide to review service factors, related videos, local driving conditions, and questions to ask before scheduling service.

There is nothing worse than a breakdown on the way to the shore. You have the car packed, the cooler loaded, the kids buckled in, and somewhere between Mays Landing and Ocean City your temperature gauge spikes, a warning light flashes, or you hear a sound that was definitely not there yesterday. What was supposed to be a relaxing trip becomes a stressful, expensive problem on the side of the road.

Most roadside breakdowns are preventable. The belt that snapped was already cracking. The tire that blew was already low on tread. The battery that died was already testing weak. These are all things that a quick inspection would have caught before you left the driveway.

At Kneble’s Auto Service Center, we offer pre-trip vehicle inspections designed to give you confidence that your car is ready for the road, whether you are heading to the Jersey Shore for the weekend, driving your college student back to school, or setting out on a long-distance road trip. We check the systems most likely to leave you stranded and let you know if anything needs attention before you go.

What We Check During a Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection

Our pre-trip inspection covers the critical systems that keep your vehicle safe and reliable on the road. Here is what our technicians evaluate:

Tires — We check tread depth, tire pressure, and overall tire condition on all four tires plus the spare. Underinflated tires reduce fuel economy and increase the risk of a blowout, especially on long highway drives in summer heat. We also check for uneven wear patterns that could indicate an alignment or suspension issue. If your need to be replaced, rotated, or balanced, we can handle that before your trip.

Brakes — We inspect brake pads, rotors, and the overall brake system for wear. If your brakes are making noise, pulling to one side, or feel soft, these are signs that is needed before you load up the car.

Battery — We test your battery’s voltage and overall health. A battery that tests weak in the shop is going to fail in a beach parking lot when you least expect it. Our complimentary battery test is part of every we perform.

Cooling system — We check coolant levels, inspect hoses for cracks or leaks, and verify that the cooling system is functioning properly. Overheating is one of the most common causes of roadside breakdowns, especially during summer driving. If your needs a flush or a hose replacement, we will let you know.

Air conditioning — There is no point heading to the shore if the AC is not working. We test your climate control system to make sure it is blowing cold and functioning efficiently. If it needs service, our team can get it right before your trip.

Fluids — We check engine oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, coolant, and windshield washer fluid. Low or contaminated fluids can cause major problems on long drives. If your vehicle is due for an or a, this is the time to do it.

Belts and hoses — We visually inspect the serpentine belt and all accessible hoses for cracks, fraying, wear, or leaks. A broken belt on the highway means your alternator, power steering, and AC all stop working at once. Replacing a worn belt in the shop costs a fraction of what an emergency tow and roadside repair would cost.

Lights — We check all exterior lighting including headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights. Driving at night with a burnt-out headlight is a safety hazard and a traffic violation.

Wipers and windshield — We inspect wiper blades for wear and check the windshield for chips or cracks. Summer shore driving means bugs, salt spray, and sudden afternoon storms. Good wipers are not optional. If your need replacing, we can do it on the spot.

Exhaust system — We listen for exhaust leaks and inspect the visible exhaust components. An exhaust leak can allow carbon monoxide into the cabin, which is dangerous for everyone in the vehicle, especially on long drives with the windows up.

Steering and suspension — We check for any play in the steering, test for unusual noises, and inspect visible suspension components. A that is manageable around town can become dangerous at highway speeds.

Warning lights and computer codes — We scan your vehicle’s computer system for stored diagnostic trouble codes. Even if no warning light is currently illuminated, stored codes can indicate developing problems that could surface during your trip.

Common Symptoms and Causes

If you live in the Mays Landing area, chances are you spend a good amount of time driving to and from the shore. Ocean City, Margate, Ventnor, Somers Point, Longport, and Atlantic City are all within a short drive, and the routes to get there, including the Atlantic City Expressway and local roads through Egg Harbor Township and Hamilton Township, see heavy traffic during peak season.

Summer heat puts extra stress on your cooling system, tires, and battery. Stop-and-go traffic in beach town congestion puts extra stress on your brakes and transmission. Salt air accelerates corrosion on exhaust components and undercarriage parts. And crowded shore town parking means more door dings, tight parallel parking scrapes, and parking lot dents.

A pre-trip inspection before shore season catches these issues early, before they leave you sitting in a hot car waiting for a tow truck on a July afternoon.

Pre-Trip Inspection for College Students

If your son or daughter is heading back to college and taking the car, a pre-trip inspection is one of the best things you can do for your peace of mind. College students are not always on top of vehicle maintenance, and a long drive to a campus hours away in a car that has been sitting in a dorm parking lot is a recipe for trouble.

We check everything a young driver might overlook: tire condition, oil level, brake wear, battery health, lights, wipers, and fluid levels. If anything needs attention, we handle it before they hit the road. We have produced videos on this very topic, including our segment where Nancy walks through the key things parents and students should check before making that drive.

Long-Distance Road Trip Preparation

If you are planning a drive beyond the local shore towns, the stakes go up. A breakdown in familiar territory is inconvenient. A breakdown 400 miles from home is a much bigger problem.

For long-distance trips, we pay extra attention to:

Belt and hose condition (these are the components most likely to strand you far from home)

Tire tread depth and condition (highway driving at sustained speed is harder on tires than around-town driving)

Cooling system integrity (extended highway driving in summer heat is the ultimate stress test)

Transmission fluid condition (long drives generate more heat in the transmission)

Spare tire condition and inflation (most people never check their spare until they need it)

We also recommend making sure your is up to date before any long trip. If your vehicle is approaching a major service interval (30,000, 60,000, 75,000, 90,000, or 120,000 miles), it is worth getting that service done before the drive rather than after.

How Long Does a Pre-Trip Inspection Take

A standard pre-trip vehicle inspection at Kneble’s typically takes about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the vehicle and what we find. If everything checks out, you are on your way with confidence. If we identify something that needs attention, we will discuss it with you and provide an honest estimate. Many common pre-trip repairs, like replacing wiper blades, topping off fluids, or replacing a battery, can often be done the same day.

For larger repairs like brake service, tire replacement, or cooling system work, we will schedule you as quickly as possible so you are not delayed. We recommend scheduling your pre-trip inspection at least a week before your planned departure to allow time for any needed repairs.

Pre-Trip Inspections FAQs

How much does a pre-trip inspection cost?

Our complimentary vehicle inspection covers many of the same items we check in a pre-trip inspection, including a battery test, belt and hose check, and computer system scan, at no charge. If additional diagnostic work is needed beyond the complimentary inspection, we will let you know the cost before proceeding.

When should I schedule a pre-trip inspection?

At least one week before your trip. This gives you time to address any issues that come up without scrambling at the last minute. For summer shore trips, scheduling in late May or early June before the Memorial Day rush is ideal.

Is a pre-trip inspection the same as a NJ state inspection?

No. A NJ state inspection focuses on emissions compliance and specific safety standards required by the state. A pre-trip inspection is a broader assessment of your vehicle’s overall roadworthiness, covering systems like the cooling system, AC, battery, and tires that are not part of the state inspection. Both are important, but they serve different purposes. If your vehicle is also due for its NJ state inspection, we can handle both at the same time.

Do you offer trip checks for vehicles other than cars?

Yes. We inspect SUVs, trucks, minivans, and crossovers. If your vehicle is loaded down with luggage, beach gear, or a packed trunk for move-in day, the additional weight puts extra stress on tires, brakes, and suspension, which makes a pre-trip check even more important.

Can you fix problems the same day you find them?

In many cases, yes. Common items like battery replacement, wiper blades, fluid top-offs, bulb replacements, and belt replacements can often be handled the same day. Larger repairs like brake service or tire replacement may require scheduling, which is why we recommend coming in at least a week before your trip.

What if my vehicle has dents or cosmetic damage?

While dents do not affect your vehicle’s drivability, if you want your car looking its best for the trip, we offer paintless dent repair both in-shop and as a mobile service. Nobody wants to roll up to the beach house with a dinged-up car.
