Service process

A Chevy service process that respects the dealer line

Every Chevy visit starts with what the owner is hearing or seeing on the dash. We connect the GM MDI2 with GDS2, pull the OEM codes, hand you a written estimate, repair on GM-grade parts and Dexos-spec fluids, then verify on a road test.

The boundary stays honest. Active warranty repairs, GM software flashes, open recalls (including the Bolt EV battery pack replacement), and Ultium high-voltage battery work go to Atlantic Chevrolet. Everything else stays here at independent rates.

  1. 01

    Inspect

Vehicle on the Rotary two-post lift. Visual pass on every component the eye and hand can reach. Tire condition, brake pad and rotor measurement, fluid levels, leak check, frame and underbody check for the trucks, and a 12V battery health test before the scan tool goes on.

  2. 02

    Diagnose

GM MDI2 with GDS2 reads Chevy protocol on Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, Equinox, Traverse, Malibu, Camaro, Corvette, and the Bolt. Road test on a route we have used for decades: Somers Point Road, Black Horse Pike, into Hamilton Township, back over Route 40. Listen for the symptom, replicate it, isolate the system.

  3. 03

    Repair

GM-grade parts where the platform demands it. Trusted aftermarket from brands we have used for decades when appropriate. Dexos1 Gen 3 on gas engines, Dexron HP on the 8L90, Dexron VI on older automatics. Torqued to spec with a calibrated wrench. Duramax diesel work goes to a dedicated diesel specialist.

  4. 04

    Verify

Post-repair scan to confirm fault codes are cleared. Road test again to confirm the symptom is gone. Oil-life monitor reset only after the service that triggered it is complete. Written record handed over so the dealer sees the same maintenance history they would have logged.

What we handle

Chevy service in Mays Landing, NJ

Eight bays, foreign and domestic, with a GM MDI2 scan tool that reads Chevy protocol. We cover the everyday work an Atlantic County Chevy owner needs and refer factory items to Atlantic Chevrolet when the dealer is the right call.

Scheduled maintenance and fluids

Oil and filter on Dexos1 or Dexos2, brake fluid flush, spark plug replacement, cabin and engine air filters, and transmission fluid service on the GM oil-life monitor interval.

Common examples: 7,500 to 10,000 mi oil, Trans fluid 45k to 60k, Spark plugs at 100k, Brake fluid every 3 yr

AFM and 8L90 work (Duramax diesel referred out)

Where GM platforms have known failure modes, an independent shop with the right scan tool and the right fluid is often the better economic answer. We diagnose AFM/DFM lifter collapse and 8L90 torque-converter shudder on the gasoline trucks at independent rates. The 6.6L Duramax diesel goes to a dedicated diesel specialist, and we will point you to one.

Common examples: AFM/DFM lifter diagnosis, 8L90 shudder + Dexron HP, Duramax diesel referred out, Diesel DPF/EGR referred out

Referred to the Chevy dealer

Active powertrain warranty repairs, GM software updates and module reflashes, open safety recalls (including the Bolt EV battery pack replacement program), and Ultium HV battery service on Blazer EV, Equinox EV, and Silverado EV go to Atlantic Chevrolet or the closest dealer holding your service file.

Common examples: Active warranty work, GM software flashes, Bolt recall replacement, Ultium HV battery

If you have a Silverado that ticks at idle, a Tahoe with an 8L90 shudder, a Bolt you want recall-checked before the road trip, or an Equinox that needs the 7,500-mile service, we have done that work in this shop. A Duramax diesel goes to a dedicated diesel specialist, and we will point you to one.

Signs your Chevy needs service

Chevys are common around Atlantic County, and most of them come to us with one of a short list of symptoms. Here is what we see most often and what each one usually means before we put the truck or car on the lift.

Lifter tick, misfire, or oil consumption on a V8 truck

Classic AFM/DFM failure on the 5.3L L83 and 6.2L L86 in 2014 to 2019 Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, and Yukon. Lifter collapses, the cam takes damage, and oil consumption climbs. We diagnose the failure with the GM scan tool and lay out the repair options before parts get ordered.

Low-speed shudder on a 2015 to 2019 Silverado, Tahoe, or Suburban

Almost always the 8L90 8-speed torque converter shudder covered by GM TSB. Many cases resolve with a full flush and refill on the GM Dexron HP fluid. We confirm the symptom on a road test before recommending a fluid service or a deeper transmission repair.

Duramax no-start, hard-start, or fuel system warning

2011 and newer LML, LGH, and L5P Duramax can experience CP4.2 fuel pump failure that contaminates the entire fuel system. This is diesel work, which we do not service. We will point you to a dedicated diesel specialist who handles it.

DEF warning, regen light, or DPF restriction on the Duramax

Heavy-duty emissions hardware on the 6.6L Duramax has a service history of DEF sensor faults, EGR cooler issues, and DPF restriction. This is diesel emissions work, which we do not service. We will point you to a dedicated diesel specialist who handles it.

Check engine light with or without a drivability change

OBD-II pulls the generic code; the GM protocol layer on the MDI2 reads freeze-frame and module-level data that tells the actual story. Saves the dealer-level diagnostic fee on Equinox, Malibu, Camaro, and the rest of the lineup.

Bolt EV that has not had the battery recall verified

2017 to 2019 Bolt EV battery packs were under the LG Chem fire-risk recall. The fix is a full pack replacement at the dealer. We can pull the VIN, check the recall status, and tell you whether the work has already been done before you take the car on the road.

Brake squeal, pulsation, or longer stopping distance

Pad wear, glazed rotors, or warped rotors from heat cycling. Silverado and Tahoe brake setups carry heavy vehicle weight; we measure pad and rotor thickness rather than guessing, and we use Dexos-grade brake fluid on the flush.

Vibration at highway speed or under braking

Tire balance, wheel runout, warped rotor, U-joint or driveshaft wear on the trucks, or a worn suspension component. The diagnostic narrows it down before parts get ordered, especially on lifted or older Silverado and Tahoe.

Two or more at once, do not wait. Chevy V8 lifter and 8L90 transmission problems get cheaper to fix the earlier they are caught.

Chevy service for Mays Landing and Atlantic County owners

Same family, same eight bays, same corner of Mays Landing since 1981. We serve Hamilton Township, Egg Harbor Township, Northfield, Somers Point, Folsom, Buena Vista, and the rest of Atlantic County. Most Chevy owners we see drive in from those towns plus Galloway, Absecon, Pleasantville, Vineland, Millville, and as far as Cape May Court House.

The nearest Chevy dealer is Atlantic Chevrolet in Egg Harbor Township, 10 to 20 minutes east. For routine service and the known GM failure patterns (AFM lifters, 8L90 shudder, Bolt recall verification), an independent shop with the GM protocol scan tool gets the work done sooner and at a better rate. The dealer keeps active warranty service, recalls, software flashes, and Ultium HV battery work.

Helpful details to mention

  • Vehicle year, model, and trim (Silverado 1500 LT, Tahoe Z71, Bolt EUV LT, etc.)
  • Engine and transmission (5.3L V8 with 8L90, 2.7L turbo, etc.)
  • Mileage
  • Which dash light is on, or what the DIC is showing
  • What changed and when (sound, feel, smell, performance)
  • Most recent dealer or shop visit and what they did
  • Whether the truck or car is still under powertrain or bumper-to-bumper warranty
  • Whether the VIN has any open recalls you know about

The more we know up front, the more accurate the estimate and the timeline.

Customer proof

Service was performed quickly and the Kneble Team provided great communication throughout the visit.

AFM and DFM lifter failure on the 5.3L L83 and 6.2L L86 V8

Active Fuel Management (AFM) and the later Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) are GM cylinder-deactivation systems on the 5.3L L83 and 6.2L L86 V8. In 2014 to 2019 Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, and Yukon, the AFM lifters have a known failure rate that ends in lifter collapse, valvetrain damage, and rising oil consumption. It is the single most common reason a GM V8 truck shows up at an independent shop with a tick at idle.

Read more about AFM and DFM lifter failure on the 5.3L L83 and 6.2L L86 V8

How we diagnose it

Cold-start scan with the MDI2, listen for the tick at idle and under light load, pull misfire counters and fuel-trim data, and check oil consumption history against the maintenance file. A failed AFM lifter usually shows a specific cylinder misfire that gets worse warm, plus elevated long-term fuel trim on the affected bank.

What the repair scope looks like

If the cam is still good, the repair is lifters, lifter guides, and the AFM oil pressure relief valve. If the cam is damaged (common when the failure goes unnoticed), the repair grows to cam, lifters, guides, timing components, and a careful flush of the oil system to clear metal. Some owners ask about AFM/DFM delete tunes; we explain the warranty and emissions tradeoffs and let the owner decide.

02 of 05, The 8L90

The 8L90 8-speed transmission shudder

GM's 8L90 8-speed automatic in 2015 to 2019 Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, and Camaro developed a low-speed torque-converter shudder that GM addressed with a Technical Service Bulletin. The shudder feels like driving over rumble strips at 25 to 45 mph under light throttle. It is not a transmission rebuild for most cars; it is a fluid problem.

Read more about The 8L90 8-speed transmission shudder

The Dexron HP fluid service

The TSB-correct repair is a full flush and refill on the GM Dexron HP fluid (the original Dexron VI no longer meets the spec on these transmissions). Many trucks come back clean after one full-volume exchange; some need two. We confirm on the road test before signing the job off.

When the shudder is not just fluid

On higher-mileage 8L90 trucks the torque converter itself can be worn enough that fluid alone will not fix it. We tell you that on the road test rather than after billing you for a fluid service that did not solve the problem.

03 of 05, 6.6L Duramax

6.6L Duramax fuel system and emissions: referred out

The 6.6L Duramax (LML, LGH, and L5P) is GM's heavy-duty diesel in the Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD. It is a strong engine with two recurring service stories: CP4.2 fuel pump failure on the LML, and emissions hardware (DEF, EGR, DPF) that needs occasional service across all variants. We do not service the Duramax diesel; that work goes to a dedicated diesel specialist, and we will point you to one.

Read more about 6.6L Duramax fuel system and emissions: referred out

CP4.2 fuel pump failure

The Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure fuel pump on the 2011+ LML can fail catastrophically and send metal debris through the entire fuel system. When it happens, the repair is the full fuel system (pump, injectors, rails, lines, tank cleaning). It is a heavy diesel job that belongs with a dedicated diesel specialist, and we will point you to one.

DEF, EGR, and DPF work

DEF heater faults, DEF quality sensor faults, EGR cooler leaks, and DPF restriction are the most common emissions-side jobs on the Duramax. These are diesel emissions repairs, which we do not perform. A dedicated diesel specialist handles them, and we will point you to one.

04 of 05, The Bolt

The Bolt and Ultium EV lineup: what we cover, what stays with the dealer

Chevy's EV lineup splits into two platforms. The 2017 to 2023 Bolt EV and Bolt EUV use the older LG Chem battery platform that was under the well-known fire-risk recall. The Blazer EV, Equinox EV, and Silverado EV use GM's new Ultium platform. We service the items every car has on both platforms. The dealer keeps the items only an EV has.

Read more about The Bolt and Ultium EV lineup: what we cover, what stays with the dealer

What stays at Kneble's

Tires, brakes, suspension, cabin AC, cabin electronics, infotainment, 12V auxiliary battery (the standard battery every EV has), wiper blades, and cabin filter. EV brake pads typically last longer than ICE brake pads because of regenerative braking; we still inspect and service them on the same schedule. We will also pull the VIN on any Bolt to verify the recall battery replacement has already been performed.

What goes to the dealer

High-voltage battery pack (Bolt LG cells or Ultium pouch cells), HV motor windings, inverter, onboard charger, DC fast-charge interface, battery cooling loop, and any HV component that requires de-energizing the pack. Those items need GM factory permissions and tooling, plus the recall pack replacement on the affected Bolt VINs.

05 of 05, How we

How we protect your Chevy warranty

The federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act protects owners using independent shops for routine service: GM cannot void your warranty because an independent shop did your oil change, brake job, or transmission fluid service. We document every Chevy service per GM standards and refer warranty-eligible items back to Atlantic Chevrolet so coverage stays intact.

Read more about How we protect your Chevy warranty

What we keep on file for you

Printed and digital service records that match the format GM expects, with Dexos1 or Dexos2 oil noted on every change, Dexron HP fluid noted on every 8L90 service, and parts receipts when we use aftermarket-spec parts. If the dealer ever pushes back on a warranty claim, those documents are how Magnuson-Moss protections actually work in practice.

What we will not touch

Anything warranty-eligible, anything that requires a GM software flash, any open recall (including the Bolt EV battery pack replacement), and the Ultium HV battery on Blazer EV, Equinox EV, and Silverado EV. We tell you directly which items are dealer-only and route you there. That is the deal.

FAQs

Chevy service FAQs

My 5.3L Silverado has a tick at idle and the oil is low again. Is that the AFM problem?

Probably. The 2014 to 2019 Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, and Yukon with the 5.3L L83 and 6.2L L86 V8 have a known AFM lifter failure pattern that shows up exactly that way: a tick at idle and oil consumption climbing. We scan for the specific cylinder misfire, check fuel trims, listen with a stethoscope, and tell you whether the cam is still good before quoting the repair scope.

My Silverado shudders between 25 and 45 mph on light throttle. Is the transmission gone?

Almost certainly not. That is the 8L90 8-speed torque converter shudder covered by a GM TSB on 2015 to 2019 trucks. The first repair is a full flush and refill on the GM Dexron HP fluid, which clears the shudder on most trucks. Higher-mileage cases may need a torque converter; we confirm on the road test before recommending the larger scope.

Can an independent shop work on a Duramax CP4 fuel pump failure?

Some can, but we are not one of them. We do not service diesel vehicles. CP4.2 failure on the 2011+ LML Duramax is a full fuel-system replacement (pump, injectors, rails, lines, tank cleaning) and it belongs with a dedicated diesel specialist. Tell us what the truck is doing and we will point you to one we trust.

I bought a used Bolt EV. How do I know the battery recall was done?

Bring it in. We pull the VIN, check the recall status against the GM database, and tell you whether the battery pack replacement has already been performed. If it has not, we route you to Atlantic Chevrolet because the recall fix is a dealer-only pack replacement. The recall coverage stays in effect; you do not pay for it.

Does using an independent shop void my Chevy powertrain warranty?

No. The federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act is explicit on this: GM cannot void your warranty because an independent shop did your routine service. They would have to prove that a specific repair or part we used caused the failure they are denying. We document every service to GM standards (Dexos1 or Dexos2 oil, Dexron HP fluid on the 8L90, parts receipts) so the paperwork is there if you ever need it.

Is Kneble's set up to scan a Chevy properly, or just OBD-II?

Both. The GM MDI2 with GDS2 reads GM-specific module data the generic OBD-II scanner cannot reach: transmission TCM data on the 8L90 and 10L80, body modules, infotainment, and emissions readiness monitors. That is what makes the difference between guessing at a problem and isolating the failing component.

How often should I change the oil on a modern Chevy?

Follow the GM oil-life monitor, which usually lands between 7,500 and 10,000 miles on gas engines using Dexos1 Gen 3. The Duramax runs on Dexos2 and has its own schedule. If you tow, idle a lot, or run short trips, shorten the interval. Severe service shortens oil life faster than the monitor sometimes shows.

Where do most South Jersey Chevy owners drive in from?

Most appointments come from the Mays Landing, Hamilton Township, and Egg Harbor Township triangle plus the Atlantic City Expressway feeder towns. Owners regularly drive in from Galloway and Absecon to the north, Vineland and Millville to the west, and Cape May Court House and Wildwood to the south. The Silverado, Tahoe, and Equinox are the most common platforms we see week to week.
