The fuel system in your car is responsible for storing and delivering fuel (gasoline a.k.a. gas) to the engine so it can be efficiently burned.
The fuel is stored in the fuel tank, which contains a fuel level sensor that sends a signal to the fuel gauge in your dashboard to let you know how much fuel you have left in the car.
Fuel travels from the tank through a hose network to the fuel injectors en route to the engine where it is burned (ignited by the spark plugs) to run your engine. The fuel system is powered by a fuel pump, which provides the necessary pressure to deliver the fuel to the engine through the fuel injection system on newer cars and carburetors on older vehicles. Along the way, there is a fuel filter to ensure that no foreign matter enters the fuel system as this can cause performance problems.
As with all systems, any of these fuel system components can fail (or leak). Failure of a fuel system component can cause the car to not start, as fuel is a critical component of the engine’s operation. A fuel leak is a fire hazard as well as an environmental hazard and should be resolved immediately.
Periodic fuel system maintenance includes cleaning of the fuel injectors and replacement of the fuel filter. Dirty fuel injectors or fuel filters can cause problems such as stalling or rough idle, therefore this maintenance should be done in conjunction with your tune-ups, to ensure that you don’t have any problems with your engine’s performance. The exact intervals for these services will vary by manufacturer and our team can advise you what is best for your vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fuel Systems:
You typically have one to two gallons of gas left at that point. It is always important to pay attention to your fuel level because if you are stuck in traffic when your low fuel light comes on, there is always the risk of running out of gas if a gas station is not nearby.
One way to measure how much gas your car is consuming is to fill the tank up and document the mileage, then drive it until at least half of the tank has been used. Next, document the mileage when you go to fill up your gas tank and also document how many gallons of gas it takes to fill it back up. If you divide the number of miles you have driven by the number of gallons of gas you put in the car, this will give you the “miles per gallon” that your car is using. Most cars can run efficiently on regular unleaded gas (87 octane) however we advise that you check your owner’s manual as some engines do require a higher grade to perform optimally. Failing to use the correct type of gas in a car that requires a higher grade can lead to an early failure of the engine or its components.
