The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ruled on March 10th of this year, that automated vehicles no longer need manual controls for the human driver, for those vehicles that are designed and built automated.
Hence, no steering wheel is needed. This technology is to prevent potential collisions, therefore keeping the passengers safe, along with other drivers and even pedestrians on the road.
We are constantly experiencing advancements in technology right before our eyes. A bonus of no steering wheel is more comfort and space in the vehicle.
I never thought I would see the cartoon Jetsons become reality.
Automated vehicles for commercial operations are currently improved in some cities in California and Arizona.
With this ruling, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is able to obtain data, analyze research, and enforce the rules.
This ruling is to ensure safety standards for developing driver assistance systems are maintained. Steeringless vehicles won’t be available tomorrow, but you can be sure it is coming. GM is expected to begin production in early 2023.
And Elon Musk was quoted as saying,
Once regulators are comfortable with just not having a steering wheel, we will just delete that.
