Have you ever been in the dilemma of needing tires for your vehicle and you’re not sure if you’re supposed to buy two or four? Now you heard that with an all-wheel or four-wheel drive vehicle that you should buy four new tires. But really why?
Hi, I’m Nancy at Kneble’s Auto Service Center. Simply put, yes, you need to replace all four wheels at the same time. With all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive vehicles, all four wheels receive horsepower to each wheel as needed by way of the differential. This allows the wheels to turn at different speeds. Now the advantage for this type of vehicle is when driving on the sand, gravel, slippery or wet roads, or snow roads, you can get better traction. Tires with a tire tread depth difference of 3/32s or up to 1/2 an inch in circumference can affect most differential systems. This always forces the system to operate causing excessive wear, leading to overheating and possible failure. Different circumference tires will cause the smaller tire to turn more revolutions to keep up with this larger circumference tire or the tires with more tire tread depth. So simply put, when replacing your tires on a four wheel or all wheel drive vehicle buy four at the same time. Thank you for watching.
