Transcript:
Is your key chain full of keys from every item you own?
Your house?
Your multiple cars?
Do you have loved ones’ pictures hanging off the key chain?
And what about, oh, look, I have Freddy J’s Bar & Kitchen keys on my key chain.
Did you realize this is potentially harmful for your vehicle and require ignition switch replacement?
Hi, I’m Nancy at Kneble’s Auto Service Center.
Before I explain why your ever-growing collection of keys on your key chain can be harmful, check us out on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube to stay up to date with our videos, and watch other videos like, What do you do when you put the wrong oil in your vehicle?
You may not realize this, but all these keys and possible pictures hanging off your key chain can become very heavy, a little too heavy.
Well, it’s not only weighing you down.
This is weighing down the ignition switch. The ignition switch has barrels within the component and the weight of the keys.
Well, they can start to damage the barrels.
On average carrying one to four keys on a key ring, well, that’s a safe amount. With that weight being about one pound or less. But when you start adding souvenirs and more keys to all your worldly possessions, you’re in danger of causing harm to the ignition switch.
Some telltale signs your ignition switch is starting to fail are:
- You start having problems getting your key out of the tumbler.
- The key becomes hard turning in the tumbler.
- Your vehicle may turn off right after you start it.
- Your key may not come out of the tumbler, therefore not being able to shut off the vehicle. It’s also possible your lights won’t turn on, or even the radio may stop working.
- Finally, your vehicle may stall, which could be from a faulty ignition switch.
Maybe you have one of those with the keyless ignition.
Well, in that case, go wild, because you can carry as many items on your keyring as you want because your vehicle doesn’t have a tumbler to worry about. All you need to do is push that start button.
