The weather’s getting nicer and you’re probably thinking, wouldn’t it be a great time to wash your vehicle? Should you use special car wash products or can you use dishwashing liquid detergent?
Hi, I’m Nancy at Kneble’s Auto Service Center. Now your vehicle is very expensive and the paint on your vehicle should be protected. So I recommend using a detergent specifically formulated for washing vehicles to protect the paint and not strip off the protective wax.
It’s also important to use a soft sponge or a lamb’s wool mitt, and not an abrasive cloth for the body of the vehicle and a different sponge for the rims and tires.
When cleaning your tires and rims of the dirt, grime, and tar buildup, you may want to buy a stronger product designed for removing the grease and grime. And take note not to have the abrasive cloth as to prevent scratching of the rims. Do not wash your vehicle in the sun or when the vehicle’s body is hot as fast drying can cause the soap and water to leave spots.
Also, do not use a circular motion with the sponge when washing as this can cause swirl marks. Move the sponge or cloth in a lengthwise motion across the hood and the body, that’s preferable.
Take note if your sponge or rag comes in contact with the ground because you can be picking up dirt or sand, which can scratch your paint. Before soaping your vehicle, rinse it off with water of any loose dirt or debris.
Now, also, divide the vehicle into segments. Start at the top so you can wash and rinse each part and allow the water to flow towards the bottom of the vehicle. Always use lots of suds and rinse the sponge frequently.
To prevent watermarks, dry the vehicle with a soft shammy or a terry cloth towel, and don’t let it air dry. Now you may need several towels for this. When done, admire your work and enjoy driving that shiny clean vehicle.
