New Jersey window tint laws are not consistent with New Jersey state inspection rules.
Yes, you’ve heard me right.
The laws regarding your vehicle’s window tint are different from those regarding your New Jersey state inspection.
Hi, I’m Nancy from Kneble’s Auto Service Center.
We get this frequently, so I’m explaining this to you now.
But before I do explain the difference between the laws, like us on Facebook, follow us on Instagram, and check out our YouTube channel.
I am sure this is no surprise to New Jerseyans, but the law is written where you can be fined for having tinted windows while being able to pass New Jersey state inspection with those same tinted windows.
Confusing.
You got it.
Welcome to our lovely legal system.
The only caveat for having tint on your windshield during the New Jersey state inspection is to make sure you have a small cutout for that state inspection sticker.
The government doesn’t mind that they can’t see your face, but as long as they see that sticker nice and clear, you are in the clear for a state inspection.
Inspectors at a state inspection center will not cut out the area of the tint for the sticker. They’re also not allowed to attach the sticker to the tint.
Now here’s the twist.
Window tint is illegal for driving down the road with one exception.
Regarding state law, front and side windows are permitted tinting at a sunscreen level with a medical exemption.
The state requires you to apply for this medical exemption by completing an application filled out by you and your physician with a prescription.
So once approved and you have that doctor’s note, you can have your windows tinted; though you must have the tinting installed, you got it by a licensed tinting facility.
Additionally, this tinting application is required to be submitted for approval by the state every four years for a fee.
