Has your steering wheel locked up, preventing your vehicle from starting? Are you thinking, “What caused this? And how do I get out of this jam?”
Hi, I’m Nancy at Kneble’s Auto Service Center.
This is easily a frustrating situation that always happens at the worst time.
Before I explain the reason for the steering wheel locking up, and how to ideally release it, be sure to like this video, as well as liking us on Facebook, follow us on Instagram, and of course, subscribe to our YouTube channel. Did you know there’s a safety feature that prevents the vehicle from moving when the key isn’t present? It’s the locked steering wheel.
Great safety precaution, huh?
However, it can even lock when your key is in the ignition. Oh my gosh, it won’t turn.
The steering wheel might have locked up after putting force on the wheel when you held onto it to get in and out of the vehicle. If this happened, you would need to apply pressure to the steering wheel in the direction which allows movement while simultaneously turning the key.
This procedure may require several attempts before being successful, so don’t give up on the first try.
We all know you want to shake the steering wheel in frustration. Don’t do that. This can cause damage to the locking pin, therefore not getting the results you’re looking for, of freeing up the steering wheel.
If it doesn’t work, give us a call to schedule your appointment for the repair.
