Hi, I’m Nancy Kneble at Kneble’s Auto Service Center. I am going to give you four simple ways of maintaining your tire to get the best results for longevity. Number one, maintain proper tire pressure. Now, this can be found on the door jam of your car, not on the tire itself. With extreme temperatures the tire pressures can fluctuate, so having an overinflated tire, you’re wearing out the center of your tie. Having an underinflated tire, you’re wearing out the edges. Also, an underinflated tire is making your engine work harder to move that car. Therefore, you’re using more fuel. Having improper tire pressure can decrease the stopping distance. Number two, rotate your tires every five to 7,000 miles. This will help the tires wear evenly. Now a good rule of thumb is when you get an oil change, you would have them rotate every other oil change unless you use full synthetic, then you’re rotating your tires every oil change.
Number three, check for proper alignment of your car. It’s going to be noticed if you’re holding your steering wheel that is centered, and you let go, and your car pulls to the left, or to the right, chances are your car is misaligned. Now we see that in New Jersey a lot with all our potholes. Check for alignment of your car because that also could affect the wear of your tires. Number four, proper balance of your tires. If you’re getting a shimmy in your steering wheel, or you feel it in the whole car, it could mean that your tires are improperly balanced, so make sure you have that checked.
