Learn About NHTSA Recalls in Regards to Your Vehicle

Nancy explains how to figure out if your vehicle has a recall and what to do when it has one.

Is there a recall on your vehicle? Do you even know if there’s a recall on your vehicle, and how do you find that out?

Hi, I’m Nancy at Kneble’s Auto Service Center. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or the NHTSA for short, is an agency that determines if there’s a safety risk with your vehicle to cause a recall to be announced.

Now a recall usually is regarding a specific part and very rarely the whole vehicle. Now, not necessarily would a recall mean you’re in immediate danger if the part is not repaired, then we do suggest that you have any and all recalls fixed. The manufacturer does not charge you to have these recalls repaired.

To check if there is a recall on your vehicle, go on to the nhtsa.gov website and enter in your 17 digit VIN number, which is found on the lower left-hand side of your windshield, or your driver’s side door jam, or even on your registration. Enter the number in and get an immediate answer if there’s a recall.

Now, an open recall means that it has not been fixed already. Recalls that are over 15 years old may not be available on this website, so you may need to contact the manufacturer to find that information out using your VIN number.

The largest recall in US history to date is… You got it. The airbag. It affected 19 different manufacturers and approximately 34 million vehicles in the United States alone. So be proactive. Make sure your vehicle is in safe operating condition.
